National studies reveal that as much as 30% of MDiv graduates leave the ministry within five years of graduation from seminary. By God’s grace, this is true for less than 7% of Covenant Seminary graduates.
From experience, we know that living and learning in community does matter. At Covenant Theological Seminary, our faculty of pastor-scholars, who are experts in their fields, are committed to keeping before you why the academic knowledge they impart is relevant for real life and ministry.
Through a pastoral approach to Reformed theological study and a deep understanding of God’s grace permeating their own lives, professors cultivate a learning environment that provides a forum for you to wrestle with honest questions about faith and life. Ultimately, we strive to help students experience life transformation through the power of the gospel so that they know Jesus Christ more intimately than they did before they came. When this happens, graduates begin vocational ministry with more than just new information—they begin equipped with tools critical for sustaining them in their roles.
Academic Focus
Our curriculum, which is rooted in and committed to the Reformed faith, strongly reflects our commitment to train servants of the triune God to clearly and effectively interpret and communicate God's Word. We focus on four critical areas of scholarship:
Scripture and Interpretation
Because the Bible is the inspired, inerrant Word of God, Covenant Seminary emphasizes careful exegesis in the original biblical languages, literary analysis, and awareness of archaeological and historical insights as methods of exploring not only the meaning of a specific text, but also its role and contribution in the unity of the Scriptures.
Theology
While biblical theology examines the roles and relations of passages in the unfolding plan of salvation, systematic theology approaches the themes of the Scriptures as a completed whole.
Tradition and Mission
Historical studies contextualize many of the themes studied in other parts of the curriculum, emphasizing especially that Jesus Christ is the hero of the Christian story in every generation and that the church’s tradition is a wonderful resource of wisdom and skilled insight for contemporary theological reflection and pastoral practice.
Ministry and Proclamation
Courses in preaching (listed under communication); worship; counseling; Christian education; church growth, planting, and renewal; and evangelism equip students with principles and methods of communication and ministry leadership important for the realization that God's truth is relevant to all times and places.
Partners in Ministry
Beyond graduation we serve and support graduates in a variety of ways that help them remain rooted in grace, which we believe is the foundation for a lifetime of fruitful ministry. For example, alumni can participate in any of our Lifetime of Ministry classes for free.
